Dudhkoshi hydroelectric project: feasibility study and detailed design under Asian Development Bank grant no. 0361-nep:ppfe. Contract no. nea/dkshep/cs/01-2073

The project, prepared by ELC Electroconsult S.p.A. (Italy) in association with NEWJEC Inc. (Japan), consists of a 220 m high Concrete Face Rockfill Dam (CFRD) located on the Dudhkoshi River. The scheme includes a spillway, diversion tunnels, and two powerhouses: one located on the Sunkoshi River (600 MW) and one at the dam toe (200 MW). The project is primarily dedicated to power generation.
IMAGEO was part of the design team, performing the following activities:

  • GLOF Risk Analysis: analysis and evaluation of the risk from Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) through the study of documented past events and the reconstruction of their effects in terms of peak discharge recorded at the dam site and sediment transport downstream of the trigger area;
  • Geological and Geomorphological Mapping: mapping of the dam abutment, the reservoir area, and the diversion tunnel corridor, including a comprehensive landslide inventory within the basin area;
  • Geomechanical Characterization: assessment of rock masses at the dam site through the analysis of point clouds obtained from Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and traditional geomechanical surveys;
  • Site Investigation Support: support in the preparation of geological, geotechnical, and geophysical investigation plans;
  • Borehole Data Analysis: analysis of drilling data, including stratigraphic logs, RQD (Rock Quality Designation), Lugeon permeability tests, BHTV (Borehole Televiewer) surveys, etc.;
  • Data Integration and Interpretation: integration and interpretation of data from direct investigations (surface surveys, boreholes, and exploratory adits) with geophysical surveys (seismic refraction, Magnetotellurics, electrical resistivity tomography, etc.).
